Why I Started Seriously Considering a Tesla

(When I Wasn’t Looking for One)

Quick Take

✔ Started as a solution for my 88-year-old mom

✔ I went in skeptical — expected hype

✔ Demo ride changed my perspective

✔ Still have real concerns

👉 Bottom line:

I didn’t go looking for a Tesla—but now I’m seriously evaluating one.

What Started This

My parents are both 88.

My mom has macular degeneration. She can’t see out of one eye, and the other is deteriorating.

She’s always been fiercely independent, but now she’s limited to short daytime drives—about 2 miles to the store and back.

The reality is simple:

👉 It’s not safe for her to be driving.

But taking away that independence is not a small thing.

The Thought

I had heard about Tesla’s Full Self Driving (FSD).

Not as a curiosity—but as a possible solution.

👉 Could this give her some of her freedom back?

👉 Could it make her safer—and others on the road safer too?

That’s what got my attention.

My Initial Reaction

Before I ever sat in one, my view was:

  • Overhyped

  • Probably unsafe

  • Not something I’d seriously consider

I wasn’t looking for a new vehicle. And I’m not someone who chases new technology just because it’s new.

The Demo Ride

I set up a demo ride near me and went with Mary.

What stood out immediately wasn’t a gimmick—it was how the car handled real driving:

  • Traffic

  • Turns

  • Lane changes

  • Decision-making

And most importantly:

👉 How smooth it was

There wasn’t a sense of chaos or unpredictability. It drove in a way that felt…normal.

That was unexpected.

The Moment It Changed

During that first demo ride, something shifted.

This wasn’t:

👉 “That’s interesting technology”

It became:

👉 “This might actually be useful”

That’s a very different thing.

Mary’s Reaction

Mary was nervous before the drive started.

That didn’t last long.

Once the car was moving, she relaxed—and by the end:

👉 She was impressed with how well it handled everything.

That mattered to me.

What I Did Next

After that first ride, I didn’t just move on.

I started digging in:

  • Watched 100+ videos

  • Scheduled a second demo ride

  • Started learning how the system actually works

The second demo was just as impressive.

The First Real Questions

Once the “wow” factor wore off, the real questions showed up:

  • Is this worth the cost?

  • How does range affect real use?

  • What about charging—especially on trips?

And for my situation:

👉 Could this actually help my mom—or is the learning curve too much?

Reality Check

Let’s be clear—this is not a solved problem.

For my mom:

  • Learning curve could be a real barrier

For me:

  • The biggest risk is complacency

  • Trusting it too much

  • Not supervising closely enough

And that matters.

Where I Am Right Now

I haven’t bought anything.

But I have done something I didn’t expect:

👉 I’m seriously considering it.

I’ve even gone as far as getting a quote to sell our current vehicle(2024 Ford Maverick Hybrid—which has been excellent for us).

That’s not something I would do lightly.

What This Series Will Cover

This is not a one-off post.

I’m going to document the entire process:

  • Evaluating whether this actually makes sense

  • New vs used

  • Which model

  • Cost vs value

  • Real-world ownership (if I move forward)

Final Answer

If someone says:

👉 “Why would you even consider a Tesla?”

Answer:

👉 Because it might solve a real problem—not because it’s new or interesting.

What’s Next

The next report:

👉 “Is a Tesla Actually Worth It (For How We Use a Vehicle)?”

That’s where the real evaluation starts.
